Wrapping up a wild Wednesday: Looking back on Tommy Tuberville’s decade at Auburn

AUBURN — After 10 years on the Plains, Tommy Tuberville’s farewell lasted only a few minutes, and Auburn players quickly streamed out of the auditorium with little emotion showing on their faces.
Tuberville resigned Wednesday afternoon, four days after snapping a six-game winning streak to Alabama with a 36-0 loss in Tuscaloosa. The 5-7 season was his worst since 1999 and prompted a furious on-campus review that led to his negotiated departure.

In 10 years, Tuberville compiled an 85-40 overall record on the Plains, becoming the fourth-winningest coach in Auburn history. He will be remembered for his near-firing in 2003, the Tigers’ subsequent undefeated season in 2004 and the failed experiment with the spread offense in 2008 that ultimately led to his downfall.
