HUNTINGTON – If Marshall ever wants to turn the corner and be a contender in Conference USA, it will have to snap its road funk.
Oh, is it ever a funk.
As the Thundering Herd prepares for its first league road trip of the season, a journey to Southern Mississippi, it will try to reverse a lot of funky recent history away from the friendly confines of Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
The difference is striking: Since Mark Snyder came aboard as the Herd’s head coach, his team is a respectable if not gaudy 12-7 at home. On the road, it’s 2-17.
Of course, you can point out that the dynamics of college football dictate that the Marshalls of the world play tougher road opponents (see: Wisconsin) and fatten up on a cupcake or two (see: Illinois State) at home.
Sorry, but that doesn’t begin to explain the difference between the Herd’s play in Huntington and elsewhere. Strip away the nonconference games, and the disparity gets worse.
