A LOOK BACK: Ole Miss 34, Samford 10: Ole Miss did what it had to do against Samford. After a sluggish first quarter, the Rebels’ athleticism took over and ran the Bulldogs out of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt admitted that once offensive tackle John Jerry and wide receiver Dexter McCluster went down with injuries _ both players returned and appear to be fine, by the way _ the Rebels simplified the running game to a couple of plays. Ole Miss used its “Wild Rebel” formation very sparingly and appeared to go very vanilla on offense.
“We still have to get a lot better in all areas offensively,” Ole Miss offensive coordinator Kent Austin said. “We better get a lot better this week.”
Quarterback Jevan Snead, after two terrific starts to open his Ole Miss career, was “a little loose in his mechanics,” Austin said. Snead threw two interceptions and missed several open targets. What remains a concern, Austin said, is that Ole Miss’ emphasis on the deep ball continues to lack results. On Saturday, Shay Hodge and Mike Wallace were open for touchdowns, but Snead overthrew Hodge and underthrew Wallace.
