Vols, Crimson Tide have SEC’s toughest opening month

The month of September (or the first month of football season since some games are actually played in August) is a time to play the creampuffs of college football.
Some teams in the Southeastern Conference got the memo; some didn’t, particularly the Tennessee Vols and the Alabama Crimson Tide.
SEC football coaches will tell you that it is important to play these games — although they won’t use the word creampuffs — because the SEC league schedule is a meat grinder and they need to ease into a season. Some teams are notorious for scheduling easy wins, but that has changed slightly as coaches have seen the need to beef up non-conference schedules after Auburn missed a shot at playing for a national championship in 2004 mainly because the Tigers had played a less than impressive non-conference schedule.
