6 legislators respond to pledge to diabetes group
At the end of June, a firestorm of criticism erupted after Rep. Jeffrey Guice, R-Ocean Springs, told a mother of a diabetic child, Nicole Nichols, she should pay for her child’s medical supplies with money she earned instead of relying on the state.
Parents of diabetic children around the state issued a challenge to state legislators, asking them to donate $10 to the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi.
In response, House Speaker Philip Gunn issued a statement saying, in part, “I personally am going to donate $100 in hopes that we can help these families while also raising awareness about one of Mississippi’s biggest health problems.”
As of Tuesday morning, two weeks after his pledge, Gunn had not yet donated to the foundation. After an article appeared on the Clarion-Ledger’s website Tuesday, Gunn donated his promised $100, according to a DFM spokesperson.
