Congress has to figure out a way to overcome physician shortages and reach underserved patients.
The answer to this problem isn’t some far-reaching law like ObamaCare, which saddles families and businesses with new tax increases and mandates.
Instead, we should begin by strengthening Medicare and enhancing Medicaid through expanded telemedicine coverage. This is why I introduced a bill this week to help connect health professionals with vulnerable patients through telehealth networks.
I’ve said it before: Telemedicine works. It extends care to patients. It serves our aging population. But most importantly, it’s about fairness. And access to care shouldn’t be limited based on where folks choose to live.
My goal is to build on existing reforms that states like Mississippi have pioneered. Along the way, I hope to help states lower their health costs by encouraging people to adopt healthier lifestyles and reducing avoidable hospital visits.
