Democrats kill Medicaid bill for lack of expansion
The main Medicaid bill failed to pass the Mississippi House floor today after a 61-52 vote.
Democrats opposed the bill because it doesn’t have a provision to allow an amendment to expand Medicaid.
“If it comes to the floor, we plan to try to kill it because it doesn’t allow for debate,” said state Rep. Steve Holland, D-Plantersville, before the vote.
House Bill 560 reauthorizes the Medicaid program. It needed 68 votes to pass in the Republican controlled House of Representatives. There are currently 65 Republicans and 56 Democrats in the House. There is one vacancy due to the death of state Rep. David Gibbs, D-West Point.
“We need Medicaid expansion in this state,” Holland said.
A Senate bill allows an amendment to include Medicaid expansion, Holland said.
Gov. Phil Bryant has said he is opposed to Medicaid expansion, citing cost.
