Gov. Phil Bryant’s guns, Soviet Union comment makes rounds

Gov. Phil Bryant argued last week that a proposed ban on high-capacity magazines in the U.S. won’t deter criminals because they can always just import weapons from the Soviet Union.

“If they want a 30-round clip, they’re going to get it out of Brazil or the Soviet Union,” Bryant said, according to The Associated Press. “It’s going to go on the black market. Self-protecting citizens won’t have that right, but criminals will.”

The comments quickly went viral, reaching the Huffington Post, among other national outlets, because even the cleverest of criminals can’t mail-order weapons from a country that no longer exists.

Presumably, Bryant meant the former Soviet Union, where gun trafficking problems have been widely reported.
