Mississippi senators support ‘fiscal cliff’ measure
Republican Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker joined their colleagues early Tuesday in voting for a bipartisan “fiscal cliff” compromise that would avert a tax hike for most Mississippians.
The Senate voted 89-8 early Tuesday to pass the bill, the result of last-minute negotiations between Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
Cochran and Wicker, both conservative Republicans, called the plan imperfect, but said it would help prevent a tax increase for virtually all Americans.
“There is still work left to do,” Wicker said in a statement. “Congress and the president must reduce the federal deficit.”
