Hinds refers UMC animal rights complaint to AG
A Hinds County prosecutor has told an animal rights group to refer its complaints over the University of Mississippi Medical Center to the state attorney general, after receiving a request for investigation last week.
The Washington, D.C.-based Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine sent a letter to county attorney Sherri Flowers-Billups asking her office to investigate UMC for a possible animal cruelty charge.
The group alleges UMC’s use of live pigs to train medical students should fall under Mississippi’s animal cruelty statute — a claim the university denies.
