Committee restores $150 million to ship project

An amendment by U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo in the House Armed Services Committee restored $150 million to an amphibious assault ship project that had been cut in subcommittee.

A Palazzo spokesman on Thursday said the subcommittee cuts could have jeopardized Huntington Ingalls shipyard’s contract to build the LHA-7 amphibious assault ship.

In a written statement, Palazzo said: “I am glad to be able to help ensure the long-term viability of our shipbuilding industry and the thousands of craftsmen that build the ships … The committee’s decision to fund LHA-7 at appropriate levels makes certain that Ingalls will be able to deliver the finished ship on schedule and at cost while keeping our shipbuilders at work.”
