CL – AG hopeful Simpson pays back-taxes, but heat continues
After facing scrutiny over failing to pay his property taxes last year, former Public Safety Commissioner Steve Simpson, the Republican candidate for attorney general, declared on radio last week that his property taxes have been paid in full.
But when The Clarion-Ledger contacted the Harrison County tax collector’s office on Wednesday, the day after that radio broadcast, a clerk said Simpson owed $4,776.96 in city, county and school taxes on his $378,000 Gulfport home, including $139.13 in late fees. The taxes were due Feb. 1.
Reached for comment Friday, Simpson said, “I’m not commenting on that story any more with you.”
The tax collector’s office declared Simpson had paid his taxes in full that day.
