After being unable for months to agree on terms for a debate, the two squared off in a closed studio debate aired on WKFK-TV and News Radio 104.9. Most questions posed to the candidates had come from station viewers and listeners.
Taylor numerous times mentioned his work on the Armed Services Committee, and his many trips to visit troops in combat while Palazzo, a National Guardsman, has been stateside.
“I’ve been to Iraq nine times and Afghanistan seven times,” Taylor said. “I’ve stood there with our troops. I appreciate Steven’s willingness to stand behind them …. I visited the unit Steven belongs to over there, although Steven wasn’t with them.”
But Palazzo, a Marine veteran of the Persian Gulf War, fired back: “I appreciate Congressman Taylor’s photo ops to Iraq and Afghanistan. I’m sure the troops appreciated you being there.”
