Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood reports BP has paid $5.5 million for 4,034 Mississippi damage claims so far, but he’s also touting measures he said would help ensure victims of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill are given a fair and transparent claims process.
Hood said Wednesday he wanted information about the claims to be available on BP’s Web site and he wants attorneys general from spill-affected states to appoint independent monitors to examine the fairness of claims, as well as how quickly they’re being resolved. He said he’s hoping for the best with the spill, but the state is prepared to go to court if need be.
