BP sends $100M to Gulf states to get them ready
WASHINGTON — BP Group CEO Tony Hayward announced four $25 million grants — one each to Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Florida — for costs associated with the oil spill his company is desperately trying to contain, and pledged to honor all legitimate claims for economic loss.
Hayward announced the grants, for each state’s area contingency plan to contain spills, in Washington on Tuesday at a meeting with reporters from Gulf state newspapers. He said the company would be making an effort to stem the oil flow Thursday by placing a cofferdam — a dome structure over the spewing well on the sea floor — and siphon the oil to the Enterprise, a ship on the surface.
“We are doing everything we can,” said the London-based chief, who has been hop-scotching from Venice, La., where the spill is projected to reach shore first, to Houston, where the company has its response center, to Washington, where politicians are beginning to agitate against the company, introducing legislation dramatically increasing a company’s liability limit for spill damages.
