Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance concerned about health care reform
There was barely room to sit during a Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance meeting Wednesday.
People filled the room to hear, among other issues, how a national health care plan would affect immigrants.
The result of the health care debate won’t include “everything that the immigrants are going to want. That’s one of the problems,” said Rims Barber, director of the Mississippi Human Services Coalition, a group of social service providers and community activists.
“That’s for sure,” one woman murmured in agreement.
A recent national report from the Congressional Research Service emphasizes that the congressional health care bill bans illegal immigrants from getting credits to pay for health coverage. But, the report says, there’s no clear way outlined in the bill to verify eligibility for the credits.
