Councilman seeks to pay Recio’s legal tab

Jackson City Council members are preparing to vote next week on whether the city should pay $20,000 to cover some of former police officer and mayoral bodyguard Michael Recio’s attorney fees.

The fees were accrued during the state trial in 2007 of Recio, the late Mayor Frank Melton and another former officer and bodyguard, Marcus Wright. The three men faced several felony charges stemming from a warrantless raid on a Ridgeway Street duplex in August 2006 and were acquitted.
” ‘
Melton had called the home a “crack house.”

Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes is proposing the order to issue the $20,000 payment.

The council voted down a similar request in October 2008 to cover the attorneys’ fees for Melton, Recio and Wright from the state trial. The request would have given Melton $125,000 and Recio and Wright $15,000 each.
