City budget slashed $2M and counting, JATRAN system needs $1.2M to keep buses running
The Jackson City Council on Monday approved more than $2 million in budget cuts and learned the bus system will need $1.2 million to keep running next month.
The council voted 5 to 0 to cut its $350 million annual budget by about $2.2 million. The cuts span all departments. No workers will be fired but 10 vacant positions are frozen for the rest of the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.
The cuts have been in the works since March when the city noticed shrinking sales tax revenues. Sales tax collections are down about $1.5 million this fiscal year.
“We went line by line through the budget,” said City Administrator Rick Hill. “We were just slicing everywhere we could.”
