Next higher ed chief will face tough goals

The state College Board is outlining efficiency goals that could ultimately play a key role in the selection of Mississippi’s next higher education commissioner.

After about two months of research, Ed Blakeslee is asking his fellow College Board members to get ready to take a sobering look for new ways of increasing efficiency and effectiveness in the state’s higher education system.

That may mean campuses sharing resources and forming partnerships.

“I believe if we stay where we are, we won’t survive,” he said. “We need results that we can share with business leaders and lawmakers.”

Mississippi’s eight public universities have weathered two rounds of statewide budget cuts this year and face the prospect of an even slimmer budget in the coming year.
