House speaker: Miss. will take bailout share
“And I can’t understand the leader of any state having any kind of negative thought about accepting the proceeds of this congressional effort,” McCoy told reporters.
He added that congressional leaders have told him that “it wouldn’t be up to the governor to take it .. no one person is going to turn it down.”
“One way or another, we will receive it,” said McCoy, a Democrat from Rienzi.
The bailout would help Mississippi pay for everything from infrastructure and education needs to Medicaid.
Barbour spokesman Dan Turner said the governor is monitoring the legislation’s progress.
“This thing’s still got a ways to go,” he said. “We don’t know what the final outcome will be. We’re not going to prejudge it and say, ‘Yes, we’ll take it,’ or ‘No, we won’t’ until we see the devil in the details.”
