Facing one of their toughest votes in their political careers this week, Mississippi’s lawmakers fail to agree about an $825 billion stimulus package that aims to help the ailing U.S. economy by using tax breaks and federal spending.
Although President Barack Obama lobbied Republicans in the House and Senate on Tuesday for support of the bill, many GOP lawmakers say they will oppose it.
Republican 3rd District Rep. Gregg Harper plans to vote “no” when the House considers the bill, probably today.
“I have always been taught when you dig yourself into a hole, the best way to get out is to stop digging,” Harper said. “The Democrats’ plan includes wasteful government spending that will not stimulate the economy and will put the country … further into debt.”
