From hurricanes on the Gulf Coast to wildfires in California, officials hope a new center at Jackson State University will enhance the nation’s ability to protect people, property and commerce during natural disasters.
Jackson State on Monday marked the opening of the Department of Homeland Security’s Center for the Study of Natural Disasters, Coastal Infrastructure and Emergency Management at the Mississippi e-Center @ JSU on Raymond Road. “This affects people every day,” Homeland Security undersecretary Jay Cohen said. “This is on the cutting edge.”
The university has partnered with the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill for the project.
JSU is set to receive $1 million in federal funding each year for the next six years to develop and manage education programs on natural disasters and emergency management.
