Mayor Frank Melton said Thursday he got permission from U.S. Probation Services before leaving the state to attend a board meeting of Broadcast Music Inc. in Nashville this week.
“If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be talking to you,” he said, with a laugh.
Moreover, Melton said there is no deal in the offing with federal prosecutors on the three criminal counts facing him and his two former police bodyguards, Marcus Wright and Michael Recio.
“I’m not making any deals with anybody,” he said. “No deal, no discussion.”
Confusion over Melton’s future was fueled this week when city officials refused to say where the mayor was or what he was doing. Late Wednesday, The Clarion-Ledger learned the mayor was returning and had called a meeting with his department heads for Thursday morning.
