Armed with a laundry list of grievances, a coalition of disabled Jackson residents is asking the courts to force the city to reform its public transportation system and comply with federal law.
“We’re not asking for much,” said Jason Bunche, a disabled resident and plaintiff in the class action lawsuit filed Tuesday. “We’re asking for the right to be able to get around.”
The Mississippi Coalition for Citizens with Disabilities and Mississippi Protection and Advocacy filed the suit in U.S. District Court asking for an injunction against the city to force compliance with the Americans with Disability Act and other federal laws dealing with disabled access. The suit alleges the city’s JATRAN bus service does not offer equal service to disabled citizens.
