Miss. coast’s post-Katrina recovery not yet complete

There has been much success in the three years since Katrina dealt its devastating blow to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Still, the state of recovery varies from city to city, person to person.

About 2,800 families are in emergency housing this anniversary, compared to the 17,500 families who were in trailers for Katrina’s second anniversary, according to Mississippi Emergency Management Agency Director Mike Womack.

People are starting to return to Mississippi’s three coastal counties: Hancock, Harrison and Jackson. In 2007, all three counties showed gains in their population for the first time since the storm, U.S. Census figures released this month show.
