Senator Doug Davis release higher education proposal

By: Magnolia Tribune - August 26, 2008

A comprehensive reform package on Mississippi’s higher learning system will be among the topics the Senate Universities and Colleges Committee will discuss at a two-day hearing next month, State Senator Doug Davis announced today.

Senator Davis issued the following statement regarding the proposed reform package:

“I am excited about the opportunity to talk openly and honestly about our higher education system,” Senator Davis said. “The purpose of calling this hearing has always been to have a discussion on how to make that system better for our students, parents and university and college officials.”

The reform package proposal includes several components such as allowing every public university or college in Mississippi to have their own Board of Trustees and reevaluating the appropriations process to possibly include a legislative funding formula, Senator Davis said.

“We have eight public universities in Mississippi, and each college is unique in their needs and in their goals,” Senator Davis added. “I believe this type of system would benefit our universities and the students they serve.”

The Mississippi Senate Universities and Colleges Committee will begin their hearing at 1:30 p.m. September 10 in Senate Room 216 at the State Capitol. On that day, the committee is expected to hear from all eight university Presidents and representatives from the State College Board. Dr. T. K. Wetherell, current President of Florida State University and former Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, will testify at 9:30 a.m. September 11.
