Inside the execution chamber in Unit 17 of Parchman, there is a bank of three phones.
Unless one of those phones rings today, convicted killer Earl Berry will be put to death.
The phones tie the Mississippi Department of Corrections to the governor, the state attorney general and the state Supreme Court. But none of those phones is expected to ring.
The state Supreme Court already has rejected Berry’s appeals, as has the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans.
