Special session: Debates reopening

By: Magnolia Tribune - May 21, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger, 5/21/8

Lawmakers return to the state Capitol today for a special session that will require more work than they expected, generate another round of debate over controversial topics and cost taxpayers thousands of dollars.

Gov. Haley Barbour, the only one who can call a special session and dictate the issues, added four items to the agenda late Tuesday. The additions brought the total to eight.

Legislators ended the regular session last month without resolving some of the matters.

But some question the immediate need to discuss Barbour’s most recent requests, including tweaking an immigration bill that he signed into law after it overwhelmingly passed the House and Senate and giving pay raises to judges, district attorneys and assistant district attorneys.
