Former senator accused of killing geese
A former state senator has been accused of killing young geese in a gas barbecue grill at his home on the Ross Barnett Reservoir.
Mike Gunn, who represented Rankin County through most of the 1990s, faces federal prosecution on claims that he killed seven goslings.
Witnesses told authorities they saw Gunn scoop up the goslings at his home on Port Lane in the Bridgepoint subdivision and put them in his gas grill. A short while later, Gunn took the chicks out and dumped them in a trash can.
The former legislator could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
Gunn made a run for former U.S. Rep. Sonny Montgomery’s seat when Montgomery retired in 1996, but lost to Rep. Chip Pickering.
Gunn served six years in the state Senate and two in the House. He resigned from the Senate in September 1997 for a job with the Washington-based Tobacco Institute, which closed the following year as part of a settlement with the U.S. National Association of Attorneys General.
