A mostly Democratic state House and Senate produced by this week’s general election could challenge Republican Gov. Haley Barbour’s agenda in his second term, political experts said Wednesday.
How easily the governor’s legislative wishes are granted depends on how many Democrats side with him, they added.
“Having one house of the Legislature that will allow the programs of the governor to be considered is very important to governance,” Barbour told reporters. “I’m very grateful to (outgoing GOP Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck) to allow my proposals to be considered, and I look forward to (Bryant) and the Senate to allow my proposals to be considered. And I hope the same will be true in the House, regardless of who the speaker is.”
