Not surprisingly, both Democrat Jamie Franks of Mooreville and Republican Phil Bryant of Rankin County say that regardless of who wins their race for lieutenant governor the rules of the Senate should not be changed.
Duh. Both Bryant, the state auditor, and Franks, a state representative, are smart politicians. They would be committing possible political suicide to say anything else.
The office of lieutenant governor has been described as that of a super legislator. The state’s Constitution gives the lieutenant governor the authority to preside over the Senate. But the real power of the office – the power to name committees and to assign legislation to committee – comes from the rules approved by a majority of the 52 members of the Mississippi Senate.
