Study: State’s tax structure unfair to poor

Mississippi’s poor fork over more of their income to the state tax man than top earners, according to a study released Wednesday by the Mississippi Economic Policy Center.

The report adds more fuel to the political debate over tweaking the state’s tax system.

“Mississippi’s tax structure does not treat its taxpayers fairly,” center director Ed Sivak said. “Our state’s tax system is regressive. Those with lower earnings pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes than those with higher income.”
