U.S. District Court Judge Allen Pepper has continued a campaign to boost Cleveland’s image in the eyes of federal officials while showing Greenville’s worst side.
Greenville civic leaders and elected officials put up a fight last year against Pepper’s efforts to get the General Services Administration to consider Cleveland as a site for a new federal building. Many thought the fight was over in January when U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., announced that the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals had said it would not get involved in site selection.
In a Freedom of Information Act request filed in June, the Delta Democrat Times asked for copies of correspondence sent Jan. 1 through June 8 by Pepper to GSA regarding the courthouse. While others on both sides of the issue may have thought it was settled in January, the GSA’s response shows that Pepper continued sending letters and newspaper clippings to GSA and others through the end of April.
