Colom’s campaign says mugshot is “fake.” Law enforcement says otherwise

By: Frank Corder - October 16, 2026

  • A mugshot of Democrat U.S. Senate candidate Scott Colom is being shared online. His team told one media outlet it was “likely being generated by AI.” The 2001 arrest record tells a different story.

The Mississippi Free Press reported Friday that Scott Colom’s U.S. Senate campaign says they have verified that a mugshot of the Lowndes County District Attorney from 2001 shared by the Hyde-Smith campaign “is fake,” further claiming that it was “likely being generated by AI.”

However, Magnolia Tribune has learned that the mugshot shown here is indeed real.

Sources with state law enforcement and the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the authenticity of Colom’s mugshot as well as the arrest record shown below.

The re-election campaign for Cindy Hyde-Smith shared the mugshot of Colom on the website created to challenge the Democrat’s positions on transgender surgeries for children and his ties to liberal financier George Soros.

According to the 2001 arrest record from the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center, Colom was arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor when he was 18 years old.

The Columbus Police Department was the arresting agency and the incident was reported to have occurred at Luxapalila Creek Park.

The nature of the incident was not detailed in the report.

Magnolia Tribune attempted to contact the Colom campaign Friday afternoon for comment, seeking clarification on what led to the Democrat’s arrest and if they were continuing to dispute the record from the Lowndes County ADC.

No response was received as of press time. Should a response come, this article will be updated.

Colom and Hyde-Smith are in a heated race for Mississippi’s junior U.S. Senate seat. They will face off on November 3 in the General Election. Independent candidate Ty Pinkins will also be on the ballot.
