The Mississippi Development Authority announced Tuesday that Marathon Cheese is expanding its manufacturing capabilities in Booneville.
MDA Executive Director Bill Cork said for more than six decades, Marathon Cheese has been an important part of the Booneville community.
“These are the types of companies that fuel Mississippi’s economic momentum – the ones that continue to expand in Mississippi and create opportunities in their communities. I thank the Marathon Cheese team for once again choosing Booneville and for investing in its future and the future of Prentiss County,” Cork said.
Marathon Cheese is a custom cheese packaging and transportation company headquartered in Marathon, Wisconsin. The company opened its Booneville location in 1962, where it currently employs 192 full-time workers. In 2000, Marathon Cheese again expanded its operations in Booneville to a larger, more efficient facility.

The $326,000 expansion investment features the installation of new manufacturing equipment and includes a production line that will increase slicing and packaging capacity at the Booneville facility. The company completed installation of the new equipment at the end of July.
MDA said the project is creating 39 jobs.
Gary S. Bachand, President of Marathon Cheese, said Booneville offers both the infrastructure and workforce needed by the company for this latest strategic investment.
“We are delighted to be working with the Mississippi Development Authority, Prentiss County and the city of Booneville on the current project to increase manufacturing capabilities and greatly appreciate the support we have received,” Bachand said.
The Mississippi Development Authority noted that the state agency is providing assistance through the Mississippi Flexible Tax Incentive, or MFLEX, program, while Prentiss County, the city of Booneville and the Tennessee Valley Authority also are assisting with the project.
“Mississippi’s strongest economic development stories are often the ones that continue to be written over decades, and Marathon Cheese is a prime example,” Governor Tate Reeves said. “By reinvesting in its operations, Marathon Cheese is positioning itself for continued success in the decades ahead. We are proud to support projects that help Mississippi’s longtime employers modernize and remain competitive.”
