Mayoral debate at JSU canceled
A debate between Democratic Jackson mayoral candidates scheduled for Thursday night was canceled when two of the three candidates pulled out.
Marcus Chanay, Jackson State University’s interim dean of students, said organizers got word Thursday afternoon that challenger Frank Melton would not be able to make the event. Melton said he had another event planned for a month.
“We knew he had another engagement, so we had been trying to work with the times,” he said.
“They called us and said they wouldn’t be able to make it.”
Chanay said organizers didn’t accept Melton’s surrogate, Hinds County Supervisor Doug Anderson, because a debate between Anderson and Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. wouldn’t have served the community.
