WLOX – Senate confirmation hearings begin for Judge Sul Ozerden of Gulfport
Mississippi’s U.S. senators delivered high praise of U.S. District Court Judge Sul Ozerden to their colleagues in Washington Wednesday. Senators Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith introduced Judge Ozerden at his Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing.
In June, President Trump nominated the Gulfport native to serve on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
In his remarks to the committee, Wicker pointed to the wide breadth of experiences Judge Ozerden will draw upon as a jurist.

WJTV – National Black Caucus Local Elected Officials Conference kicks off in Jackson
The Annual National Black Caucus Local Elected Officials Summer Conference kicked off Wednesday afternoon at Jackson City Hall. The conference is hosted by the National League of Cities.
Mayor Lumumba welcomed over 200 delegates, saying that the city of Jackson is a great setting for the group of black elected officials to learn about building bridges. Coalition building is the topic of the conference, and the delegates will have daily learning sessions and activities around the city.

WLOX – Mississippi ACLU asks cities repeal panhandling penalities
The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi is asking 16 cities in the state to eliminate local laws that penalize panhandling.
The organization says in a news release Wednesday that the request is part of a national effort that includes work by the National Law Center of Homelessness & Poverty…
…ACLU of Mississippi says that since last year, four cities in the state have repealed panhandling ordinances – Ridgeland, Meridian, Starkville, and Southaven.
It is asking for other cities to do the same – Brandon, Clarksdale, Cleveland, Clinton, Corinth, Greenville, Greenwood, Grenada, Gulfport, Horn Lake, Jackson, Long Beach, Natchez, Olive Branch, Pascagoula and Vicksburg.
