Former President Barack Obama issued his first list of endorsements for the 2020 election cycle today which included 118 candidates in 17 states, but none of them included any Democrat seeking the U.S. Senate or U.S. House from Mississippi.
Not Congressman Bennie Thompson.
Not Mike Espy for U.S. Senate.
Not Antonia Eliason for the 1st Congressional District.
Not Dorothy Benford for the 3rd Congressional District.
Per FoxNews, Obama’s office said the former president selected candidates because he believed their election to public office would “advance key goals,” including winning control of the U.S. Senate, holding the majority in the House, electing Democrats who will “support fair redistricting in 2021,” and promoting “diverse, emerging leaders for this time.”
Obama’s office went on to say that the former President “plans to issue a second wave of endorsements this fall after the remaining states’ primaries have wrapped up.”
Most recently, Obama got involved in Mississippi politics at the very last second for former AG Jim Hood in the 2019 gubernatorial election. Hood had kept Obama at arms length during the entire campaign, but in a last minute desperation attempt the campaign rolled out the Obama endorsement via robocall. Hood went on to lose by 5 points to Tate Reeves in November.
