YP – Reeves discusses first round of CARES Act funding and where it will go

Governor Reeves gave an update on what the Legislature did on Wednesday to help small businesses at this time.

Reeves said they will do a final review of the bill and after that process is completed the bill could be signed. He indicated he is aware in general terms what is in the bill but said it will go through the process before being signed.

“Great work to everyone who got involved and has been working together,” said Reeves.

YP – Legislative leadership discuss first appropriation of CARES Act dollars to small businesses

“The real heroes here are the House members and the Senators who voted to do this,” said Speaker Gunn. Members were working until midnight on Wednesday to get the measure passed.

Gunn and Hosemann both said small businesses have been hit hard by the pandemic. The idea brought forward by this legislation will help businesses who were hurt the most by the forced closures. This $300 million is roughly 25 percent of the CARES Act money.

WTOK – Mississippi casinos allowed to reopen May 21st

Mississippi casinos will be allowed to reopen at 8am on Thursday, May 21.

WLOX News received confirmation of that decision Thursday afternoon from Allen Godfrey, Executive Director of the Mississippi Gaming Commission.

When asked about that decision to reopen, Governor Tate Reeves said, “If the gaming commission has released their decision, it is final and official.”

YP – Poll shows Hyde-Smith with large lead over Espy U.S. Senate race

If the election for Mississippi’s junior U.S. Senate seat were held today, Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith would best her Democrat and Libertarian party challengers with over 58% of the vote, according to the latest poll conducted by the Impact Management Group for Y’all Politics.

Hyde-Smith is polling at 58% while Democrat Mike Espy sits at 31%.  Jimmy Edwards, the Libertarian candidate, is showing just south of 3%, with under 9% undecided.
