DAILY JOURNAL – Analysis: Reeves tries to balance concerns of health, jobs
Mississippi Republican Gov. Tate Reeves is having to balance his libertarian-leaning instincts with public health concerns during the coronavirus pandemic.
It’s been his job the past several weeks to order some businesses to temporarily close and to restrict people’s face-to-face interactions to try to slow the spread of the highly contagious virus. His statewide “shelter in place” order remains in effect until May 25.
Reeves is gradually letting businesses reopen even as numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths continue to rise.

Mississippi District Director Small Business Administration Janita R. Stewart said here in Mississippi, about 280 in and out-of-state bank and non-bank lending institutions participation in the first round of Payroll Protection Program making 20,784 loans for $2,481,000,606 billion to Mississippi businesses and non-profits.
“During round 1 of PPP, an astronomical number worth a total of 14 years of SBA loans were made in less than 14 days,” Stewart said. “Our agency is fully committed to ensuring that America’s workers and small businesses continue to get the resources they need to get through this challenging time.
YP – MS Senate takes first swing at draft to appropriate CARES Act dollars
The Mississippi Senate Appropriations Committee met on Friday to discuss the first proposed piece of language dedicated to the disbursement of CARES Act dollars. It focuses primarily on support for small businesses in the state. This language is only a draft and has not yet been filed, but that could come early next week.
Senator Josh Harkins, who walked the members through the language, said that this was a good place to start and would allow them to come back and appropriate more if necessary.

The Voter Protection Project has endorsed Democrat Mike Espy in the Mississippi U.S. Senate race.
According to the release, the Voter Protection Project was first founded in 2019 and are “a leading political arm working to end partisan gerrymandering and voter suppression across the country.”
“VPP has been taking the fight to Republicans state-by-state supporting candidates for office at the federal and state levels that are champions for voter equality,” the release states. “This cycle, VPP is focused on getting involved in some of the toughest races in the country and fighting the bad actors — that’s exactly what they’re planning to do here in Mississippi.”

WAPT – Jackson mayor announces the city will reopen with restrictions May 15
“We will open with guidelines on how retail establishments can open moving forward,” Mayor Lumumba said.
Lumumba said his decision to open with restrictions is forced by Gov. Tate Reeves executive order reopening the state. The mayor said he needed to make a decision for what is practical based on the cities around Jackson reopening, but didn’t believe the data show it’s safe to open.
