With many people finding love via the internet these days, its no surprise that lawmakers are beginning to work on legislation that will address the potential threats this relatively new forum presents.
One bill in the Mississippi Senate this year will prohibit convicted sex offenders from registering with online dating services.
The bill reads:
“It is unlawful for a person required to register as a sex offender under Section 45-33-25 to register on a dating website or to attempt to pursue romantic or sexual interests using an online internet dating forum within ten (10) years of the date of conviction of an offense that triggers the registration requirement.”
SB 2163 was authored by Sen. Turner-Ford and aims to limit a sex offender from any romantic or sexual pursuits online within 10 years of their conviction date. With the internet being such a difficult place to monitor for criminal activity, bills like this aim to keep the inter-webs safe from potential predators.
