Mississippi Democrats are taking jabs at a former member of their party who is working to improve the Mississippi Corrections System at the request of Governor Tate Reeves.
Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs tweeted a statement saying it was an honor to lend his experience to finding a new leader for the Corrections System at the request of Reeves.
In a retweet and comment, the Mississippi Democratic Party noted his prior House Committee service and said, “Too bad his extensive legislative oversight didn’t make a difference.”

Mayor Flaggs was appointed to lead the search committee for a new Commissioner at the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
Flaggs announced in March 2018 that he was switching from the Democratic Party to be an Independent.
“I am not burning any bridges with the Democratic party,” Flaggs said at that time. “I have served as a Democrat for 30 years and I am proud to have been a Democrat, but I think that moving forward for the future I need to be placed in a position where I can be much more effective by being able to work with the White House.”
Since then, he has visited the White House numerous times and worked with the Trump Administration on issues facing municipalities.
He previously served as a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1988 to 2013. He served as Chair of the Corrections Committee and served on several other committees, including Appropriations, Banking and Financial Services, Constitution, Legislative Budget Committee, Public Health and Human Services and Rules.
Mississippi Democrats lost all 8 statewide elections in 2019.
