CLARION LEDGER – How an advisor at Haley Barbour lobbying firm is at the center of Trump-Ukraine saga
An adviser for the lobbying firm of former Gov. Haley Barbour could be a crucial witness in the President Donald Trump-Ukraine issue engulfing national politics.
Kurt Volker is a senior international adviser to the BGR Group, the lobbying firm founded by Barbour.
Ukraine hired Barbour and the BGR Group in 2017 to lobby on behalf of the country in Washington, D.C.
That same year, Volker began working as a special envoy to Ukraine — a volunteer position through the U.S. State Department similar to an ambassador.

Reeves’ position on payday lenders matches that coming from Washington Republicans. Hood’s position on free tuition sounds similar to Washington Democrats, but there is a difference. Hood’s proposal closely resembles a Republican proposal put forward by state Rep. Jerry Turner of Baldwyn that passed the GOP controlled House in 2014. (It was killed in Reeves’ Senate.) It also resembles the “Tennessee Promise” program championed by Tennessee Republicans in 2014.
While revealing, this “promiscuous policy” analogy is not the only perspective voters may consider. For example, Reeves has taken a more pro-consumer stance on gas taxes than Hood. Reeves has said that under no circumstances will he increase gas taxes to pay for roads and bridges. Hood has said he will consider doing so as a last resort.
Nevertheless, the Washington analogy will take center stage when President Trump and/or his disciples show up to tout Reeves and his allegiance to their policies.
US Department of Commerce invests to support growth of aviation and aerospace workforce in Mississippi
Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced that the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $2 million grant to Pearl River Community College of Poplarville, Mississippi, to fund construction of a new Aviation and Aerospace Workforce Academy at the Stennis International Airport. The grant, to be matched with more than $3.9 million in state and local investment, is expected to help create 469 jobs, retain 550 jobs, and generate $5 million in private investment.
“Through efforts like the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board and the National Council for the American Worker, the Trump Administration is committed to creating opportunities for technical training and manufacturing as a way to provide good jobs for Americans,” said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. “Pearl River and other community colleges are essential partners for United States government and businesses.”
“Thank you to Secretary Ross and the Trump Administration for investing in Mississippi to build the Aviation and Aerospace Workforce Academy,” said Governor Phil Bryant. “This grant will continue to promote the importance of community colleges and technical training programs in our state.”
“Workforce training and development have become a critical part of sustaining Mississippi’s leadership in the aviation and aerospace industries,” said Senator Wicker. “I appreciate President Trump and the Department of Commerce for making technical training a priority across our country. The students trained at this new facility at Stennis will graduate with the skills they need to be successful and contribute to our state’s economic growth.”
WTOK – Mississippi Department of Human Services receives $1.4 million federal grant
The Mississippi Department of Human Services has been awarded a $1,366,223 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to improve and modernize application processing in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
The grant will use the SNAP Model Notice Toolkit as a guide to modernizing recipient notices and transition to a platform connected to data in the eligibility system to reduce Case and Procedural Error Rates…
…The $1.4 million grant represents 27 percent of the $5 million awarded nationwide.
LAUREL LEADER CALL – MDOT Commissioner gives talk to Ellisville Garden Club
Mississippi Southern District Transportation Commissioner Tom King was the program speaker at the September Ellisville Garden Club meeting in the home of President Elizabeth Barnes.
King’s program was on litter in Mississippi. MDOT is responsible for more than 30,000 miles of state highways. He reported that taxpayers pay more than $3 million annually for picking up more than 290,000 bags of litter.

WJTV – Mississippi Aquarium to open early 2020
Hold your fins, the Mississippi Aquarium is set to open in Gulfport Spring 2020.
Instead of traveling to the nearest aquarium in Atlanta or New Orleans, families across the state will be able to visit the new 80,000 square feet of exhibits right along the Mississippi GulfCoast.
The aquarium will house a wide range of water, land and air species including alligators, river otters, river fish, dolphins, stingrays, shorebirds.

A longtime Jackson city councilman says he is taking a leave of absence for his health.
Councilman Kenny Stokes revealed today he has bell’s palsy, a nerve condition that is temporarily paralyzing his facial muscles.
