WLOX – Gov. Bryant sets special election deadline for U.S. Senate
Mississippians interested in running for U.S. Senate have until 5pm on April 24 to qualify for the seat long-held by Senator Thad Cochran and now filled by Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith.
The election will be held on November 6, 2018, the date already set for this year’s general election. If no candidate receives a majority of votes on that date, a runoff will be held November 27.

GULFLIVE – Packages sent to Ocean Springs mayor, board with white sheets inside
They arrived at Ocean Springs City Hall Monday afternoon — eight packages shipped via Amazon, with one addressed to Mayor Shea Dobson and one each for the seven members of the board of aldermen.
Inside each package was a set of white bed sheets — and a note:
“Hi Mayor/Alderman, I wasn’t quite sure of your size, so just consider this a do-it-yourself kit. Your other option, of course, being to grow a spine, publicly denounce the Klan and take down the flag. From Sarah Halstead.”
The packages appear to have been sent by Sarah Halstead — a former Ocean Springs resident now residing in Roanoke, Va., according to her Facebook page.
WLOX – New state flag lawsuit set to be filed in court tomorrow
Members of the Mississippi Rising Coalition are continuing their efforts to get the state flag removed from Ocean Springs city buildings.
A new state flag lawsuit is set to be filed in federal court Wednesday in Gulfport. This action by the Mississippi Rising Coalition comes after a second video appeared on YouTube. In the 10-minute video, a voice says he represents the United Dixie White Knights. The United Dixie White Knights admitted to sending the first video to the organization last week.

Federal education officials say Mississippi won’t have to restructure its system for assigning A-to-F letter grades to public schools.
The U.S. Department of Education said in a news release Thursday that Mississippi’s plan provides transparency about how schools and districts are performing.
The federal department also said the Mississippi’s partnerships among public, private and Head Start programs for preschool children “will provide a solid foundation to prepare students for school.”

A poll commissioned by Democrat Mike Espy’s U.S. Senate campaign shows him leading Republicans Cindy Hyde-Smith and Chris McDaniel in a three-way race as the two Republicans split votes.
The poll was taken by Chism Strategies in the days after Gov. Phil Bryant announced his appointment of Hyde-Smith to temporarily fill the seat until a Nov. 6 special election…
…The poll of 603 likely general election voters shows Espy leading with 34 percent, Hyde-Smith with 27 percent and McDaniel at 21 percent.
