MAEP Final Estimate Calculation from MDE Passes OSA Review

By: Sarah Ulmer - February 15, 2018

Today, State Auditor Stacey Pickering released his review of the final estimate calculation of the Mississippi Adequate Education Program (MAEP) for FY 2019, which was submitted to OSA by the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE).

In a letter addressed to legislative leaders including the Governor; Lieutenant Governor; and Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Auditor noted his concerns over the effectiveness of the formula and repeated calls for changes to the MAEP formula while expressing gratitude to the Legislature for its efforts to retool the funding mechanism of K-12 education in Mississippi.

The final estimate of MAEP funding from MDE matched that of OSA in the amount of $2,464,069,326. This comes after OSA discovered an MDE error that caused the preliminary estimate calculation to fall over $700,000 short in September 2017. The report can be found online at the OSA website.
