FOUR CHARTER SCHOOL APPLICATIONS MOVING FORWARD
The Mississippi Charter School Authorizing Board approved four charter operators to move forward in the application process to open new public charter schools in Mississippi.
Nine operators had originally expressed interest in opening a charter school earlier in the spring. The next evaluation from the Board will be in July with a final vote of approval coming in September. To date, just four schools have been given approval out of the more than 50 or so that have submitted letters of intent.
Of the remaining schools, none are in the city of Jackson where the current charters in the state are located. Rather, these schools, if approved, would benefit from changes made to the charter school law in 2016 that allows students in school districts rated “C,” “D,” or “F” to cross district lines to attend a charter school.
The applicants, which are all proposing to open for the 2018-2019 school year, are:
– Clarksdale Collegiate, which proposes to open a school in Clarksdale serving grades K-8;
– KC Schools Inc., which proposes to open a school in Magnolia serving grades pre-K-12;
– SR1, which proposes to open a school in Canton serving grades K-12; and
– Shades of Elegance Corp., which proposes to open a school in Drew serving grades K-8.
