Democrats wise up and don’t hold #msleg special session hostage for an additional day

By: Magnolia Tribune - June 6, 2017

Legislature passes budget bills, concludes special session

While it looked for much of Monday that parliamentary maneuvering of the Democratic minority would force legislators to return for a second day to conclude the special session, in the end, Democrats, knowing their efforts would not ultimately change the outcome of any legislation, stopped their efforts.

The Legislature approved with near unanimity budget bills for the office of Attorney General Jim Hood, for the Department of Transportation and for the state Aid Road Program that provides state funds to help with the maintenance of major local roadways. Those three bills died during the regular session, which ended in March. The Legislature was facing a July 1 deadline, the start of the new fiscal year, to pass the bills.

The three bills were funded at the level that the legislative leadership had agreed to during the regular session.
