GEOFF PENDER: Mississippi lottery has legs
The lottery has legs these days. It seems to me it’s becoming something of a populist issue. I know I don’t get out much, but judging from some politicians’ support of it, I’m guessing some polling has borne this out….
…The study is a good idea. And I think Gunn may be right — a lottery may not produce the revenue some believe it would. And there are many down sides to a lottery — that they are a “tax on the stupid,” and that many people with latent gambling problems will squander money they can’t afford to lose.
But unless such a study comes back and says emphatically that a lottery will bring pestilence and despair to the state, I don’t know that the movement will be tamped down by data.
