EdBuild CEO Rebecca Sibilia said she intended to have her group’s proposals to lawmakers before the new year. But the Legislature will convene the 2017 session Tuesday without the plans in hand.
A spokesperson from Lt. Gov. Tate Reeve’s office said the New Jersey-based group is expected to submit its recommendations within the next few weeks.
Sibilia’s organization advocates a weighted funding system in which funds are allocated based on specific student needs such as those of special education and English language learners. The premise for weighted funding is the cost of educating students varies when considering individual needs. An example would be factoring in the costs of addressing language barriers for students who do not speak English. Additional funds might be needed to hire a bilingual instructor to work closely with the student, a consideration that a weighted student formula would likely take into account.
