Mississippi DHS promoting new plan for early childhood program

New plan for early childhood in Mississippi

The Mississippi Department of Human Services’ new plan for the early childhood program in the state has community colleges playing a central role in the management, training, coaching and technical assistance for centers in the program.

The program, which goes into effect July 1, is referred to as the family-based, unified and integrated early childhood system. The transitional period will begin in January and run through June. The state also is doing away with the controversial voluntary quality rating system in place under the current program administered through Mississippi State University’s Early Years Network program. It is a move that some owners of childcare centers have opposed.
